The highly anticipated annual Beale Debate took place at College on Saturday 3rd December.
This year was the 10th Anniversary of the Beale Debate and the motions were ‘This House would ban ‘no platforming’ at university campuses’ and ‘This House does not believe that people should be defined by how they are educated’. Both titles provoked much perceptive, relevant and insightful discussion over the course of the morning.
The debate kicked off with Alexandra Beukers and Sophie Wand (SFC1) teaming up against Bethany Evans and Selina-Jane Spencer (Guild 2014 leavers) to propose the motion 'This House would ban ‘no platforming’ at university campuses'.
Emilie Nixon and Poppy Sowerby (SFC2) then challenged Miranda Elvidge and Nicole Evans (Guild 2012 leavers) over the question ‘This House does not believe that people should be defined by how they are educated’. Unsurprisingly, the motion also brought out strong responses from girls and staff in the audience.
After much discussion, and a very close decision, the overall winners of the morning were CLC’s Alexandra Beukers and Sophie Wand.
